The Book of Ruth | Hope Fulfilled
How to use it: After watching/listening to this week’s message, from June 11, 2023, use the questions to go deeper into the message, with your group…or on your own. The questions will introduce you to the topic, reflect content from the sermon, go ‘Beyond the Message’, & get you thinking about practical applications for your life.
What book or TV series have you watched that had a good or surprising finale? Why do you think some books, shows, or movies receive “spin offs?”
Ruth’s plan was based upon the traditions of the “guardian-redeemer” (Lev 25:23-28) and Levirate Marriage” (Deut 25:5-10). Read these passages and determine what parts of them do and do not apply to Ruth 4.
As you consider the whole story of Ruth & Naomi, recap what took place for Naomi to turn from bitterness to joy, emptiness to fullness, and sorrow to hope.
Pastor Mark initially defined redemption as, “the act of buying back or saving from evil.”
a. What types of things to people “redeem” in daily life (i.e. coupons)?
b. If a fuller definition of redemption requires “personal risk and/ or sacrifice,” what do the following passages tell us about biblical redemption? Psalm 1017:2; Psalm 130:7; Job 19:25; Eph 1:7; Col 1:12-14; Gal 3:13.
After reading 1 Cor 6:19-20 and Gal 2:20, how are we to understand our redemption and our response (i.e. the way we live) in light of our redemption? Where have you seen, heard, or participated in bringing redemption to others in the past weeks? Are you willing to commit to respond like Boaz, rather than “Joe Schmoe” when opportunities appear to risk and sacrifice for the name of Jesus?
