Our History
In 1957, the west end of Edmonton was surging with young families. Longing for these community children to encounter Jesus, Jack McKay & his wife started a Sunday School that met in Sherwood school. Within a few years, 140 children were attending.
Before long, small groups of adults were meeting in one another’s homes. With vibrant faith, they prayed and studied the Bible together. The heartfelt hospitality expressed in these homes beckoned more and more to join, and soon the need for a church building was apparent.
Adopted by the North American Baptist Conference and sponsored under McKernan Baptist Church, the growing group of people were empowered to make plans, buy land and build a church.
Meadowlark Baptist Church was officially organized in 1963, buying three lots of land in the neighbourhood for $15,000. Reverend Willy Muller was the first pastor to lead the church as it continued to grow and strengthen the surrounding community. Before long, this once sponsored church plant was sponsoring its own church in Spruce Grove: Parkland Baptist.
By the early 70’s, two off-site Sunday schools were started at nearby schools. With over 200 children on Sunday mornings between the three locations, a bus was donated to transport the children.
Meadowlark paid off its mortgage in 1977 with a mortgage-burning ceremony. During this year, ten families from Meadowlark ventured out to start another church plant called Westland. Meadowlark bought two houses beside the church, which were used as Sunday school rooms. Pastor Ken MacDonald arrived from Ontario to become the pastor and stayed for the next 23 years.
Excitement built as more staff was hired and the building expanded to support the continued growth of the church.
In the late 80’s, Meadowlark celebrated its 25th anniversary and Westland merged back into Meadowlark with a new name “Meadowlark-Westland”. After much prayer and consideration, 10 acres of land was purchased in the Lewis Estates area and construction began. The new church was completed in 1993 and “West Meadows” became the new name of the church to combine all the pieces of history together into one name.
West Meadows soon became the heart of new life in Lewis Farms. Junior and senior high youth groups were thriving, a young adult group flourished, many senior citizens would meet regularly, and an International Friendship Club was established to help new immigrants learn English. Many who participated in the club experienced new life with Jesus, as a result, and soon the church began translating the worship service into Mandarin which led to a Chinese church plant.
Church members sought out ways to express counter-cultural love by regularly serving breakfast at Westlawn Jr. high school and developing a prison ministry. The youth group traveled to Jasper, Vancouver, and New York City, while other congregants traveled all over the world on mission’s trips to serve others and glorify God, sharing His impact on their lives while inviting the people they were reaching to experience His best.
In 2016, Mark Dixon was hired as Lead Pastor and with a transition in leadership, West Meadows formed a Next team that began a revisioning process designed to solidify our mission, vision, and values.
As a result, several practical and enriching plans to experience new life with Jesus by living out His grace, truth, and love were put into motion.
Community events such as Easter Eggstravaganza and Canada Day Pancake Breakfasts make West Meadows the heart of new life in Lewis Farms. People of the area identify West Meadows as their community church, enjoying school Christmas concerts, Community League events, and several church-sponsored opportunities to connect with one another.
West Meadows has a physical presence in the lives of so many people. For many, the church is the location of their children’s day care or family’s Food Bank. West Meadows has also become an appreciated digital presence in an ever-changing world.
West Meadows at Home, our Sunday morning experience, is live-streamed into homes across the globe. Our website and social media platforms engage people, near and far, to learn about and experience new life with Jesus.
New methods of teaching and sharing life together have been adopted to pivot with today’s circumstances. West Meadows offers groups that grow together online, in-person, or sometimes both.
West Meadows is still on mission. We continue to invite people to new life and we welcome you to join us!
