This is the Way | The Way of Greatness

Summary of this week’s material: Jesus taught His disciples IN THE WAY, as they journeyed ALONG THE WAY to the cross where He would BECOME THE WAY!

How to use it: After watching/listening to this week’s message, from March 27, 2022, use the questions to go deeper into the message, with your group…or on your own. The questions will introduce you to the topic, reflect content from the sermon, go ‘Beyond the Message’, & get you thinking about practical applications for your life.

  1. Concerning greatness, is there a sports team, television program, or product that you believe to be superior? (For example: Oilers over Flames, Survivor over Amazing Race, Tide over Gain).  Without starting a group brawl, share your opinion.

  2. Read Mark 9:33-34. Why do you think the disciples were embarrassed?

  3. The argument that the disciples were having revealed that they were focused upon human concerns, as they compared themselves to one another. Mark 9:14-29, is an event that takes place just prior to this argument. What evidence is given in this passage that the Disciples’ focus is on human concerns? (Hint: Look at Jesus’ words in verse 19 and 29)

  4. Read Luke 14:7-11.  How was the sin of the Pharisees similar to the sin of the Disciples?  What is the root sin that they’re all guilty of?

  5. In Mark 9:35, Jesus flips the script on how to assess greatness. How can a person who is first also be the very last? Comparatively, how do the people of the world determine greatness?

  6. Deuteronomy 17:14-20 gives directions to Israel’s kings (First in the land) on how they are to be a servant of all (The very last).  What should the King concern himself with?  What should he not concern himself with? Although he was not a King of Israel, how did King Nebuchadnezzar, in Daniel 4:29-37,  follow/not follow the instructions of Deuteronomy 17:14-20?

  7. Read Mark 9:36-37.  As you recall what Pastor Mark said in the message, what did he say ‘child’ represented?  If ‘child’ represents the marginalized and vulnerable, who are those people in your community?  What would it look like to serve & welcome them?  What would it look like if Jesus entered their life & flipped the script?
